Mandarino Minutes for 4-28-23

 Dear Upton Middle School Families,


Congrats Science Olympiad -

Science Olympiad had a great season! They finished 20 out of 42 teams at the state competition. We had 12 events where we ended up in the top 50%.


5th place - Forestry - Reuben Lorenz and Riya Veershetty

7th place - Green Generation - Noah Shine and Sam Church

3rd place - Wheeled Vehicle - Evan Lokey and Karthic Bhatt

8th Place - Can't Judge a Powder - Atharv Saxena and Eli Atkinson

7th Place - Sound of Music - Patrick Conroy and Reuben Lorenz






Salmon In the Classroom -

  • Tuesday, May 2nd-  Mrs. Francis's classes, Mrs. Milletics's class, and Mrs. MacKellar's 3rd hour will be out.  

  • Thursday, May 4th-  Mrs. Foster's classes, and Mrs. MacKellar's 2nd & 4th hours will be out.  



Shrek Jr. The Musical Next Saturday, 

May 6th -


The Shrek Jr. performances will be 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM in the John & Dede Howard Auditorium at St. Joseph High School. I know the kids are really excited and pumped up for this!  It would be wonderful for you to join one of the two shows if your schedule allows.






May is Mental Health Awareness Month -


Parents, this is a a free parent training (but applicable to any adult that deals with children) regarding suicide awareness and prevention. It is important information as you interact with your own child but also their friends. Attendance is limited so please sign up if you would like to participate. 







5th Grades visit Upton - 


All 5th graders from our elementary schools will be visiting Upton either next Tuesday or Thursday during the school day. We know this is a very exciting day for our district 5th graders!

All School Dance - 


Friday, May 12th from 5 - 7PM we will have a school dance for ALL Upton Students - 6th, 7th and 8th graders.  Only Upton Students are allowed.  $4.00 admission in the Blue gym.  The concession will be open during dance hours.




Cheer Club for 8th graders - 


If you have an 8th grader that is interested in joining a Cheer Club next year as a freshman, please plan to attend a meeting at Upton on May 8th at 4pm in the Blue Gym.  There is a sign up sheet in the Upton office.

Late Start Wednesday - 


Wednesday, May 3rd is a late start and school starts at 8:45am.  Doors open at 8:15am and breakfast is available at that time.




Lunch this week - 


Monday - Boneless chicken wings, tater tots

Tuesday - Penne pasta with marinara or Alfredo sauce, garlic bread stick, broccoli

Wednesday - Beef nachos, refried beans

Thursday - Chicken and waffles, hash browns

Friday - Bosco sticks, marinara sauce, caesar salad


*All hot lunches served with choice of milk, salad, and fruit.

Good Luck Science Olympiad -

Good luck to our science olympiad team as they compete in the state championship this Saturday at Michigan State University!  



Good Luck Tomorrow -
Good luck to our performing arts students who will be participating in solo and ensemble tomorrow!  It will be fun and a great experience!

Board Of Education Meeting -

The Board of Education meeting is this Monday, April 24th in the Upton Middle School Media Center beginning at 6:00 PM.

UPTO Meeting on Tuesday -

Upton Book Fair Next Week -


The Upton Book Fair is almost here!  The fair in our media center will run from 4/24 through 4/28.  Students will have opportunities to visit and shop through their ELA classes, but families can also shop through our online fair  beginning on 4/24 -- just in time to browse for summer reading!


And don't forget about the eWallet option -- a safe, cash-free way for your child to shop the fair by Friday, April 28.

UMS library team wants to send your kids into summer with FREE books

Once again, our amazing partnership with the SJPS Foundation and 

Forever Books has made this possible.


Please encourage your child to browse their Summer Send Off 

book options posted in their grade level Google classroom and 

submit their top choices using the UMS Summer Send Off book 

selection form (linked within the book options slide deck). 

With over 50 titles to choose from, there’s something for everyone!

Upcoming 5th grade Events -

Parents - We will be hosting a 5th to 6th Grade Parent ONLY night on April 27th at 6:30pm in the Upton Auditorium.  This is for Parents ONLY of all 5th graders entering 6th grade next year.


Students- All 5th graders will be visiting Upton on either May 2nd or May 4th from 10:15 to 1:15.




Senior Service Project reminder - 


Thursday, April 27th there will be pizza, prizes, kickball/dodgeball, and tutoring offered in the Blue Gym from 3pm - 5pm.  All students are welcome.  Sign up sheet is in the Upton office.  Please sign up by noon on Thursday if you plan to attend.
