Mandarino Minutes for 2-24-20

Dear Parents/Guardians,



Congratulations to Jason Shi! -

We are so happy to announce that Jason Shi won the Cloverleaf Spelling Bee last Thursday at Lake Michigan College.  Jason will now head to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. in late May.  Jason's winning word was "grunge".  Jason is a really humble, bright, and nice young man!  We wish him good luck!

32nd Annual Battle of the Books-

What a wonderful morning we had on Friday with our 7th graders!  They really worked hard the last seven weeks reading, competing, and having fun.  The students were so well behaved and fun to watch!

Choir Festival Tomorrow -

Tomorrow our 6th-8th grade choirs will perform at The Chapel for their choir festival.  

6th grade will perform at 9:45 AM
7th grade will perform at 11:15 AM
8th grade will perform at 1:00 PM

*** If you plan to attend please arrive a few minutes early as they will not let you enter during a performance. ***







7th & 8th grade Pre-festival Concert this Wednesday -

Our 7th & 8th grade Bands and Orchestras have a pre-festival concert this Wednesday evening at the John & Dede Auditorium at SJHS beginning at 7:00 PM.  Festival will be next week at Lake Michigan College at the following times:

Next Monday, March 2nd:
7th grade orchestra performs March 2nd at 9:00 AM
7th grade band performs March 2nd at 11:20 AM

Next Wednesday, March 4th:
8th grade orchestra performs March 4th at 9:30 AM
8th grade band performs March 4th at 10:30 AM






Scheduling for 7th and 8th graders -

This Friday, February 28th by 3:00 PM all 7th and 8th graders should have their schedules for next year submitted via PowerSchool.  7th and 8th graders should also be sharing with you their proposed selections.  In addition 8th graders have a blue sheet that should be singed and returned to the office this week as well.  If your son/daughter has any questions they can schedule an appointment with their counselor in our main office.





Career Day and Half Day -

This Friday, February 28th will be our annual Career Day for students.  Our students will get the chance to interact with 3 different career fields.  Our 6th graders will make their selection for next school year for band, orchestra, choir, or PE on this morning as well in PowerSchool.



Friday is also a half day of school with dismissal at 11:00 AM.  Please make sure rides are here by 11:15 AM.






8th grade free ice skating this Friday, Feb. 28-
Who:   Upton 8th graders only
What:  Free ice skating (Rental and admission)
When:  Friday, February 28th from 7:00-9:00 PM
Where:  John & Dede Howard Ice Rink in St. Joseph
How:  This is made possible by our UPTO





Late Start Wednesday -

This Wednesday, February 26th is a late start Wednesday.  School will begin at 8:45 AM and breakfast will be available starting at 8:15 AM.







Locker Clean Out this Thursday-

We will have a locker clean out this Thursday, February 27th.  We encourage students to not let things pile up, but sometimes it does.  If your son or daughter wants to bring some items home before Thursday that would be great also.





UPTO Officers-






Illnesses - 

Parents, please do not send your kids to school until they are fever-free and/or vomiting free without medication for 24 hours.  We’ve had too many kids return to school too soon, just to be sent home again a few hours later.  Thank you for your cooperation!
