Mandarino Minutes for 3-10-23

 Dear Upton Middle School Families,


15 straight years-

Congratulations to our Science Olympiad Students and coaches Ms. Kietzerow and Dr. St. Amand as they won their 15th consecutive regional championship at Lake Michigan College last Friday!


Congratulations!!!! -

What a past week at UMS in the performing arts department!  The following occurred within the past week:

  • 7th & 8th grade orchestra division 1 ratings
  • 8th grade band division 1 ratings
  • 7th grade band division 2 ratings 


String Spectacular - 


The Orchestra String Spectacular will be Wednesday, March 14th at 7pm for grades 6-12 at the SJHS Auditorium.





Leaving Early for Spring Break ???-



Spring Break begins next Friday, March 17th through Sunday March 26th.  If you plan to leave on vacation before Friday the 17th, please leave a message on the Upton Attendance line with the date(s) of your child’s absence.   Call 269-926-3400, option 1. 





Tennis Club Meeting - 


There will be a Tennis Club Meeting on Wednesday, March 15th at 2:50 pm in the Upton Auditorium for any 6th-8th grader interested in playing tennis this Spring.  Please plan to have your son/daughter attend if they are interested in the tennis club this year. Tennis club will begin in early April. This is a student only meeting.





College Board for 8th grade - 


8th grade parents and students:  Your student's College Board account will be used all through their high school year to access and send scores to colleges. It is very important that your student also fill out the attached form so we can help them remember their username and password if they forget.

UPTO meeting - 


Our next PTO meeting will be Tuesday, March 28th at 8:30am in the Upton Conference Room.

Communications Field Trip with

Mrs. Vlietstra -

The 8th grade communications class took a field trip this week to the radio stations at WIRX/WSJM. Thanks to Mrs. White the students enjoyed and learned many things about the inner workings of a radio station!



Can Drive at Upton - 


Builders Club is hosting a non-perishable can drive for the month of March! Advisory classes will collect canned goods starting Monday March 6th - Friday March 31st. The advisory class that collects the most cans by the end of March will win a donut party!

Students of the Week - 


Upton staff votes each week on students that go above and beyond in the classroom.  This week’s students of the week are:

Educator of the Week -





Late Start Wednesdays - 


This Wednesday is a late start and school begins at 8:45am.  

Doors open at 8:15am.



LMC Red Hawk Volleyball Camp -



Prospective Parent Meeting - 


We will have a Prospective Student and Parent meeting on Thursday, March 30th beginning at 1:00pm.  This meeting is only for families that are not currently attending any St Joseph Public School but plan to attend Upton in the fall 2023.  This is NOT for 5th graders already attending one of our elementary schools.  Those students will have a separate meeting and visit.  Please call the Upton Office at 269-926-3400 and let us know if you plan to attend.




Spring Ahead on Sunday - 


Don’t forget to change your clocks on Sunday and “Spring Ahead” 1 hour.

Monday - Cheeseburger, french fries

Tuesday - Cheese quesadilla, tortilla soup with Fritos, seasoned corn

Wednesday - Rotini pasta, marinara or meat sauce, garlic bread, veggies

Thursday - Big Daddy pizza, steamed broccoli

Friday - No School---Spring Break


*All lunches served with a choice of milk, salad bar, and fruit.
