Mandarino Minutes for 10-1-21

 Dear Parents/Guardians,

National Custodial Day-

We are so lucky at Upton to have such a great custodial crew!   They work hard and want to make sure that Upton is clean and well taken care of!  These guys also are also so kind, caring, funny, and love people!  Thanks Mr. Kennedy, Mr. Eichler, Mr. Lowe and Mr. Martin!  Today our UPTO and Interact club made their day very special!

A wonderful gesture-

A great thing happened this week at the Upton cross country meet!  7th grader, Adalynn Randall, saw a Lakeshore runner hurt and assisted her with finishing the race.  Adalynn gave up the chance to have her personal best time to assist a rival runner in a time of need.  This goes right along with a Positivity Project phrase we had a few weeks back on "other people mindset".  Adalynn stepped up and put someone ahead of her in a very unselfish manner.  This made my day when I heard this!  Below is a picture near the finish line. 😀

Guidance Support Groups-

GUIDANCE SUPPORT GROUPS

We are looking forward to kicking off some small groups in October to help meet our students’ social emotional needs.

These groups will take place during the school day and will involve your student missing some academic time.  We will rotate the class hour the group meets each week so a student is not missing the same class each time, but the student will still be responsible for material missed.

Below are the groups we are offering at this time, but we may offer others in the future.

If you think your student is  a good fit for any of the following groups,

please fill out this form.

Club H2O - from Well of Grace  - This is a safe place for girls, ages 13-18, to connect, increase self-esteem, find potential and explore possibilities. Goals include defining who you are on the inside and out… and celebrating what makes you unique.

Meets for  6-8 weeks.  Please find more information and  a permission slip here.

TRAILS to Wellness - Students will learn & practice coping skills to manage difficult emotions.  Research on the program has shown a significant decrease in symptoms of anxiety & depression for students who have participated, which will likely improve their academic and behavioral outcomes.  This is an educational, skill-building group, NOT a therapy group and meets for 10 weeks.  Attached is a permission slip.

Lory’s Place - Students will have the opportunity to recognize and understand this difficult emotion as they learn valuable strategies for managing grief.  There is no timeframe for grief, and as children develop and mature, their responses to grief (past or present) may change as well.  Grief does not follow a typical timeline, and even if your student’s loss is not recent, they may  struggle as they manage their grief at these different developmental stages. This group meets 1 time a month all year.

Please find more information and a permission slip here.

B.E.A.R.S. (BE Aware, Real and Social)- Students in this group will explore some basic social skills as they work to recognize their individual value and the value of others. Group members will practice communication and friendship skills including  how to navigate a group environment. This group will meet for 4-6 weeks. Attached is a permission slip.

Positivity Project Next Week -
